Advantage West Midlands, together with Arts Council for England, is helping to fund the £100 million redevelopment of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and its surrounding Waterfront estate in Stratford upon Avon. This investment is intended to stimulate a renaissance in the visitor economy in the region, to provide a major source of economic growth. The 1932 Grade II* listed theatre will be transformed to create the best modern playhouse for performing Shakespeare in the world. At the heart of the project is a thrust stage auditorium – a modern take on the courtyard theatre Shakespeare wrote for – seating approximately 1,000 people. The plans also include improved education facilities, foyers, bars, restaurants, shops and exhibition spaces along with landscaped gardens, pathways, a riverside walk and a new public square.
