Advantage West Midlands has acquired significant parts – around 23 hectares (57 acres) – of the former MG Rover site in South Birmingham, near junction four of the M5. The Agency is working in partnership with St Modwen Developments – who are also major landowners – to undertake a comprehensive programme of redevelopment, predominantly for employment uses. The first phase of development – Longbridge Technology Park – on a site at the corner of Bristol Road and Longbridge Lane is due to be completed shortly, and further elements of the wider scheme are in the planning stages. The Technology Park consists of a 45,000 sq ft Innovation Centre so technology-based business, along with a second building of 29,500 sq ft for larger technology-based companies. Nanjing Automobile Corporation has taken a 33-year lease on the 42 hectare (105 acre) South Works and demolition of 2.5 million sq ft of redundant buildings is due to be complete in Autumn 2007. A further 73 hectares (181 acres) is currently being masterplanned in partnership with Birmingham City Council and Bromsgrove District Council for a mixed use development.
