Improving engagement of West Midlands universities, companies and research organisations in research and innovation is crucial for the region’s future prosperity. Funds are available through the regional ERDF programme under Priority 1: “Promoting Innovation, Research and Development”, however, we must not overlook the wider opportunities on offer through other types of EU funding.

Amongst these, the 7th Framework Programme (FP7), as the main EU fund for research, development and demonstration, is of particular importance to our region. Over seven years, FP7 will provide €54.5 billion to further research excellence and its practical commercialisation across Europe. Advantage West Midlands runs two schemes to help regional organisations to access this funding:

  • ERDA – European Research & Development Awards for preparation of large scale FP7 proposals in 5 key sectors (advanced materials, transport technologies, medical technologies, digital media & ICT and energy). See the 'Related Documents' section to access the ERDA Application & Guidance notes.

  • Small Grants for Travel & Subsistence – scheme for applicants to FP7, CIP and Interreg to visit potential partners abroad. See the 'Related Documents' section to access the Travel Grant Application Form & Guidance notes.

The Marie Curie Actions under FP7 People Programme provide opportunities for training and career development of researchers and for bringing skilled professionals from Europe to West Midlands companies and organisations involved in research. See the 'Related Documents' section to access the Marie Curie Actions information sheet.

Advice and support on FP7 and related funding programmes is coordinated by West Midlands European Research, Development & Innovation Group (EU RDI) which brings together all key regional partners involved in European R&D funding, including universities, businesses and local authorities. EU RDI is chaired and facilitated by Advantage West Midlands. Information and support is provided in conjunction with the West Midlands in Europe office in Brussels and the ERRIN network (European Regions Research & Innovation Network).

Further information on these groups and organisations can be accessed from the 'Related Documents' and 'Related Links' sections.
